My little pony series has always been popular among people of all ages, children loved to play with the ponies, adults like to collect them because of the beautiful designs and nostalgia they give us today.
If you want to start collecting, here is some tips for you what you should know about collecting mlp:s.
1) How to tell a fake out of real one?
- Check first the hoof of the pony, it should say "Hasbro", otherwise it's fake.
- Check the plastic the pony is made from, if the color is very bright and you can see inside the pony while holding it in light, it probably is fake. Most of the my little ponies are colored with light colors or pastels, and only the ponies made from glittery-plastic are such that you can see through a bit. Fake ones also feel lighter and more shallow since the plastic is not as thick as in a real pony.
- Check the painting style, in fake ones the paint looks rather new and it is also made with few basic colors. The decoration is also usually quite simple and doesn't fit the pony's color scheme. For example it can be just one red flower and that's it. The paint is also done badly and you can see a bit of the pony's color underneath it.
-The hair color looks bad when compared to the color of the pony, and it is not as thick as it should be.
2) How valuable they are?
It totally depends on the pony, how rare it is and the condition of the pony. If you buy one from fleemarket, it might be either 1€ to 5€, depending on if the seller knows that the pony might have some collection value or not. Most of the ponies aren't that expensive and can be bought from internet quite cheap. I recommend new collectors to keep eye on the prices that people ask from a pony and how the quality of the pony affects the price.
3) Where can i get ponies for my collection?
Fleemarkets, internet (ebay, amazon etc.), from relatives and friends, anywhere you can think of! Make sure you tell everyone you know that you collect and ask them to look ponies for you if they can, because then you have a greater chance of finding ponies if you have willing people helping you. Some of your friends might even have some ponies left from the childhood and might not need them so go ahead and ask.
Give time for collecting, ponies are very common thing to collect, so there might not be many ponies around in fleemarkets and if there is, they are often sold quite quickly after they arrive.
4) What is "pony disease"?
It is not a real disease that you could get, but it's one type of bakteria (or something..) that can be seen as tiny spots on the plastic of the pony. It is contagious and can spread to a "healthy" pony! Usually this "disease" comes to pony if it has been long time in warm and moist or wet place (attic perhaps). You can't heal the pony, but by putting the pony in to boiling water you can kill the bakteria so it won't spread anymore.
In Finland, ponies are quite popular, so it's very hard to find them from fleemarkets, so you have to visit them frequently and try other cities too. You also have to prepare to dig deep of toy piles in fleemarkets and spend some time at the lower levels of fleemarket tables.
